DEI goes far beyond just widening recruitment and retention strategies. DEI also is needed to ensure that people who have been pushed to the margins receive a legal standard of care in the emergency room and in other clinical settings.
DEI helps people to work together across difference more effectively. DEI is useful so that in retail settings Black people aren't automatically assumed to be shop lifters.
That everyone only focuses on "who gets the job" and not on "how someone of any ethnicity handles team and customer relations" once they have the job is something that should be added to the conversation.
I'm a 62 year old Black woman who out of the 7 times I've been to the ER, 6 of those times I was treated as though I was a drug addict making up my medical crisis. People have to learn that often they cannot discern people outside of their own ethnic groups genuine facial expressions.
